Exit-intent triggers
Ask on the way out, and mean the same thing on a phone as on a laptop.
Exit intent fires when somebody looks like they are about to leave. It is the highest-yield moment for a survey on a page where the interesting question is why they did not do the thing, because the answer is at its most available right then.
The implementation matters here more than the concept, because exit intent on a phone is not the same event as exit intent on a laptop. Pertento resolves it to two different detectors chosen from the detected device: the pointer leaving the top of the viewport on desktop, and fast upward scrolling on touch.
It is one trigger with two implementations rather than two triggers, which is the right shape. The question you are asking is "on the way out", and a survey that quietly only works for half your traffic because the trigger assumed a mouse is a survey with a badly skewed sample.
It is worth pairing with URL targeting rather than running everywhere. Exit intent on a checkout page asks something specific; exit intent on every page asks a question nobody has a reason to answer.
