Experiment Targeting Library

Save an experiment's targeting under a name and load it onto other experiments on the same website.

What saved targeting is

Saved targeting lets you reuse the same audience setup across experiments. You save the conditions in an experiment's Target Area under a name, for example "Cart with products, mobile", and load them onto any other experiment on the same website.

A saved targeting includes every kind of condition in the Target Area: URL rules, cookie rules, device targeting, and activation rules (events and selectors).

Saved targetings belong to a website. You only see the ones saved on the website you are working on.

Save an experiment's targeting

  1. 1Open the experiment and go to the Settings tab.
  2. 2In the Targeting & conditions section, click Saved targeting.
  3. 3Choose Save as new.
  4. 4Give it a name. You can see exactly what will be saved before you confirm.
  5. 5Click Save targeting.

Names must be unique on the website, and capital letters do not count as a difference: "Mobile cart" and "mobile cart" are the same name. Names can be up to 80 characters.

You can also save an experiment with no conditions. An experiment with no targeting runs for all visitors, so loading that saved targeting onto another experiment removes its conditions.

Load a saved targeting onto an experiment

  1. 1Open the experiment you want to update and go to the Settings tab.
  2. 2Click Saved targeting.
  3. 3Pick one of your most recent saved targetings from the list, or choose Search all saved targeting to find any of them.

Loading replaces the experiment's current targeting. It does not add to it.

If the experiment already has conditions, Pertento shows you what will be removed and what will be added before anything changes. Click Load and replace to confirm.

If the experiment has no conditions yet, the saved targeting is loaded straight away.

Changed your mind? Click Undo in the message that appears after loading. It restores the previous targeting. Undo is available for about 8 seconds, and stays while you hover over the message.

Running experiments

Changes to targeting are not published to your website automatically. After you load a saved targeting onto a running experiment, click Enforce new Rules to publish the change. Draft experiments pick up their targeting when you start them.

See where an experiment's targeting came from

After you save or load, the Targeting & conditions section shows "Loaded from" followed by the saved targeting's name.

If you then change the experiment's conditions, an "Edited since load" label appears. If you undo your changes so the conditions match again, the label disappears.

Update a saved targeting

If you edited an experiment's conditions after loading them, you can copy your changes back into the saved targeting:

  1. 1Click Saved targeting.
  2. 2Choose Update followed by the name of the saved targeting.
  3. 3Check the list of what will be added, removed and kept.
  4. 4Click Update to confirm.

You can also overwrite any other saved targeting on the website: choose Save as new, then switch to Update existing and pick the one to overwrite.

Rename or delete a saved targeting

  1. 1Click Saved targeting, then Search all saved targeting.
  2. 2Hover over a saved targeting to see the rename and delete buttons.
  3. 3To rename, type the new name and press Enter. Press Esc to cancel.
  4. 4To delete, click the delete button and confirm in the row.

Saved targetings are copies

When you load a saved targeting, the experiment gets its own copy of the conditions. Updating, renaming or deleting the saved targeting later never changes an experiment that already loaded it. This keeps running experiments from changing without you noticing.

Good to know

URL Redirect experiments cannot use activation rules. A saved targeting with activation rules is shown but cannot be loaded onto a URL Redirect experiment.

A URL Redirect experiment needs at least one URL rule before it can start. Loading a saved targeting with no conditions onto one removes its URL rules.

Members can see experiments but cannot save, load, update or delete saved targetings. Ask an Admin or Owner on your team.
