Setting up the Pertento editor in Google Chrome

The Pertento editor is a Chrome extension. It opens in Chrome's side panel, next to the site you are looking at, and from there it opens the visual editor on that page. Install it from the Chrome Web Store:

The extension needs Chrome 116 or newer. It is only needed to build variants: visitors see your experiments in any browser, and never load anything the extension installs.

Opening the side panel and signing in

1. 1Click the Pertento icon in the Chrome toolbar. The panel docks on the right, runs the full height of the window and can be dragged wider. It works from about 320 px wide.
2. 2Sign in with your Pertento account from the panel.
3. 3The panel follows your system's light or dark setting.

Unlike the old popup, the side panel does not close when you click into the page.

Finding an experiment

The side panel follows the tab you are on. Switch tabs or load another page and it finds that page's website and lists its experiments. If the site does not have the Pertento script installed, the panel says so instead of showing an empty list.

The list opens on Drafts, because that is where editing happens. Switch the status filter to see All, Running, Deployed, Ended or Archived experiments. Search finds an experiment by name or by its number, so #5881 finds experiment 5881.

Opening the editor

1. 1Pick an experiment.
2. 2Pick the variant you want to edit.
3. 3Open the editor. It loads on the page in front of you, not on whichever page the experiment was created from.

Site access. The first time you open the editor on a website, Chrome asks for permission to access that site. It asks once per site, and only when you open the editor there. Taking a variant screenshot asks for access to all sites the first time you use it.

Switching variants

Once the editor is open, switch variants from the tabs in the editor's top bar. The switch happens in place: the old variant's changes are removed before the new ones are applied. Save or undo any unsaved changes first, because the editor will not switch while you have them.

Notes

• You must be signed in to your Pertento account for the editor to work.
• The extension does not change your site. A change only reaches visitors once it is saved to a variant and the experiment is running.
